History of the Lateral Filing Cabinet

lateral file cabinetJust like any other product that has been on the market for quite some time, the lateral filing cabinet has a history. And like so many other items, they were not the first prototype of the original idea. Most things that have been invented have varied from the original idea over time as there are ever changing facets that are being improved upon. Well, the same holds true for the filing cabinet. Read on for a brief look into the history of these office wonders that are so easily overlooked in our every day hustle and bustle.

The first filing cabinet was made in the 1800’s and was only manufactured in the United States. Many businesses were required to store and keep documents organized in a time where the only means to do so were in boxes that had to be stored on shelves. Once the file cabinet was invented, it revolutionized the way we conducted business when it came to sorting and keeping track of important documents. People became dependent on these storage systems and started looking at ways to change it up to better suit their needs. This brought about the lateral filing cabinet, which introduced new storage options.

It took quite a long time for the introduction of the lateral filing cabinet. It was in the late 1990’s that the look really began to change. Business owners were no longer bound to the traditional vertical cabinet that they had become accustomed to. Our filing styles evolved from bundled paperwork in the 1800’s, which was a nightmare for trying to find a particular piece of paper, to the method of standing files in hanging folders that we are all so familiar with today. There was a high demand for volume and organization from educational systems, medical systems and other businesses and companies that had a lot of papers and files to keep track of. The lateral file was efficient in allowing the user to easily store important files and the smaller stature made it easier to use and more accessible.

Like other styles of filing cabinets, the lateral filing cabinet made bundling paper work obsolete. Often times, paper work would have to be gathered in pile and bundled in some manner. While this worked to keep important papers together, this also proved to be time consuming if someone were searching for a particular piece of paper or document among a large pile. Plus, there was no organization involved and individuals stored these bundles of papers wherever they could, such as boxes, drawers and shelves. When the filing cabinet was invented it made filing and storing important documents and files much easier.

While the design and invention of the lateral filing cabinet is relatively new compared to such models as the vertical filing cabinet or the horizontal filing cabinet, it has proven to be a very important staple in almost every business in operation today. The need for keeping your important documents and files in an orderly fashion that makes finding them easy will never go out of style.
