Office Cubicle Facts

There are certain rules and etiquette that must be abided by in order to allow an office to run smoothly. This is even more so when your company is introducing new cubicles to the office. While many people are familiar with cubicles, there are some that are not. Working close to neighboring employees in a small office-like space can have many disadvantages, particularly when other employees have not learned how to act appropriately. It may not seem difficult to grasp what is right and wrong to do when it comes to cubicles, but not everyone takes others into consideration before themselves.

The first thing to keep in mind when you are in new cubicles is to be aware of your neighbors at all times. While at work everyone is always busy, whether they are making phone calls, writing a business letter to a client, figuring out estimates or trying to solve a problem, no one wants to be interrupted. In fact, when it comes to the office and work, being interrupted is one of the most annoying things. You can mess up calculations, miss important information on the phone, lose your train of thought or the solution to an issue and so forth. It is better to wait for a more convenient time to talk to others.

Although this may seem obvious when it comes to new cubicles, refrain from using screen savers that make noise or using anything at your desk that makes noise. Even the ring on your telephone should not be very loud. With so many people in one room and many individuals in close proximity to you, if everyone was loud, it would be chaos. Be as considerate as possible and try to keep noises down to a minimum when you are working. What may not seem distracting to you may be very distracting to your neighbor in the next cubicle.

Also be aware of scents and smells. This one may appear as something small and not something to worry about, but think again about how close you will be to other employees around you. Cubicles, even new cubicles, do not leave a lot of extra room for anyone. A strong scent can irritate your co-workers and even give them a headache. Be aware of what you put on in the morning, such as a perfume or cologne, taking great care to not over-do it. And most definitely shower every day. Bad hygiene can be a big distraction. Consider those around you.

Lastly, when it comes to new cubicles and the small space you have to work in, try to block out peoples’ private conversations. You will likely hear a lot of personal facts about your neighbors’ lives, often times information that you don’t care to know. While they may not be aware that you can hear them, do not mention anything personal or private that you overheard. Keep in mind how annoying and distracting the person in the next cubicle is when you conduct your business or personal conversations.
