Office Cubicles Help Enforce Etiquette

Many offices employ the use of cubicles. The office cubicle allows for a certain amount privacy and space for each employee. Because there are usually many cubicles placed together in a single space, there is certain office etiquette that must be taken into consideration. After all, cubicles incorporate several employees so you have neighbors in close proximity to you. In order for everyone to be able to work efficiently with only minimal interruptions, one must abide by these guidelines and learn to think of the others around you, rather than just yourself.

The office cubicle is a very small space for you to work and there are others around you at all times. The first thing you need to know is to speak softly, especially on the phone. If you are speaking too loudly on the phone, other employees who are on the phone will have to speak up so their voice can be heard and eventually people will have to use loud voices in order to be heard at all. Also, do not use your speaker phone. Have your conversation through the telephone receiver. No one wants to be distracted by your voice as well as the voice on the speaker.

An office cubicle does not offer that much privacy; therefore never talk about confidential matters while you are in your cubicle. If you need to speak with someone concerning confidential information, find a private and quiet place, such as your office’s board room. The board room is set up to host important meetings in private. Instead of potentially leaking important information that is only supposed to be known by particular employees or parties, be considerate and have that conversation in a more private area.

Another necessity is to turn off your cell phone while you are in your office cubicle. Your cell phone can ring at the most inopportune moments during the workday. It could ring while you are in the middle of an important conversation with a client, or when you are receiving instructions from your supervisor. If this happens, it is very distracting to the person you were speaking with and can very easily change your train of thought on the matter you were discussing. It is rude to the person you were conducting business with when you have a personal distraction. Make sure you keep your cell phone turned off during business hours. Part of being a professional is keeping your personal calls to a minimum and keeping your private life private.

Lastly, whenever you leave your desk, even if it is to use the bathroom, turn your answering system on in your office cubicle. No one but you should be responsible for answering the calls that come to you; thus, when you leave your cubicle your neighbor should not have to pick up your phone and answer it because you did not turn on the answering system. This will make your employer happy as the productivity of your neighbor is not hindered by your lack of consideration.
